There’s no end in sight to the gardening innovations popping up each week all around the globe. The latest spotting? SproutRobot, a San Diego-based web service that offers regionally optimized gardening plans and sends seeds when it’s time to plant.
Aspiring gardeners begin by telling SproutRobot their ZIP code, and the site generates a personalized planting calendar for that area based on historical weather data. From there, users choose whether they want to buy their own seeds and simply receive planting reminders from the site—that service is free—or whether they want to receive certified organic heirloom seeds and instructions whenever it’s time to plant. Pricing on the latter option ranges from USD 19.99 per year for a “Patio Garden” service including up to three varieties and a few small harvests per year to USD 59.99 per year for the “Family Garden” service with up to 10 varieties and veggies several times each week for a family. Whichever paid option they choose, SproutRobot then asks them to select which fruits and/or vegetables they want to grow. Once those choices are made, SproutRobot hand-checks the user’s planting calendar and sends out the right seeds at just the right time.
Now in beta, SproutRobot currently serves only U.S. users, but it’s aiming to expand, according to one of the company’s recent tweets. One to partner with or emulate for aspiring gardeners in other parts of the world? Not everyone has an eye for interior design—or the budget to hire a full-fledged, custom service. Enter California-based Avenue Interior Design, which recently launched an online offering that aims to give consumers a lower-cost way to get a professional look for their home.
Consumers begin by choosing the room or rooms they want to make over. They then browse through Avenue’s I Heart Design site, which offers nine very different looks chosen by its designers. Each is represented by a door with a corresponding style; when clicked, users can see inside for a closer look. Once they find a look they like, users tell I Heart Design about their goals for the room and any special considerations, such as pets with a penchant for muddy pawprints. Measuring the room comes next, followed by uploading a few photos including any furniture that will be reused. For a fee of USD 3.50 per square foot, I Heart Design will then send out a custom box including two space plan options for each room; a spec card for each piece of furniture the designers selected; a paint card with recommended colours; a window treatment card with recommended styles; and a tape measure and other small tools. I Heart Design chooses items from a mix of flea markets, national retailers and trade-specific vendors, according to a report on Daily Candy. Consumers can buy those they like directly from their personal online design board on the site.
This fall, I Heart Design by Avenue will launch a similar offering aimed at hospitality providers. One to try out on your own hotel or restaurant—or emulate in another part of the world? We’ve looked at a variety of home energy monitors in recent years, including Google’s offering, the attractive Wattson device and a smattering of others we recently rounded up. We couldn’t resist sharing news of one more, however, primarily for its very appealing price.
Belkin’s Conserve Insight helps consumers monitor their energy usage by showing the true impact of various appliances and devices both financially and on the environment. Users simply plug any appliance into the Conserve Insight. Whether it’s a TV, microwave or lamp, the Belkin device will show how much that device really costs each year in terms of watts, dollars and carbon dioxide. Whereas the customizable monitor is preloaded with the U.S. average electricity rate for use in calculations, users can enter their own rate from their electric bill; they can also set the CO2 emissions rate for their specific region.
Equipped with a standard U.S. 3-pin wall outlet connector, Belkin’s Conserve Insight is now available for preorder on Amazon.com for USD 29.99, with shipping from the California-based company expected this summer. Who will create counterparts at comparably reduced prices (and a similarly user-friendly design) for other parts of the world…?

Bargain-minded consumers have no shortage of “deal a day” sites to choose from—the challenge now is staying abreast of them all. That means it’s time for a little aggregation, which is just what Dealradar offers.
Launched in May, Chicago-based Dealradar is a free service that finds and reports on unique daily-deal offers from sites like Groupon and LivingSocial in more than 60 cities across the US, the UK, Australia and Canada. Drawing from more than 80 daily deal sites, Dealradar follows, indexes and classifies local deals and then delivers them to consumers in an aggregated manner, clearly organized by the type of product or service offered. Consumers can subscribe to Dealradar via email, Twitter, Facebook or RSS; a mobile app is also available. Either way, by using the service consumers stand to save the time it would take to peruse 15 or more individual daily e-mails to see every local offer, Dealradar says. When they find an offer they like, users can simply click on it to be directed to the site offering the deal; if they make a purchase, the partner site involved then shares an unspecified portion of those proceeds with Dealradar.
With benefits not just for consumers but also for deal sites and the advertisers they represent, Dealradar promises to offer one of those all-too-rare win-win-wins. Coming soon, the company says, are expanded options for advertisers and partners; new cities are continually being added as well. Retailers, service providers and deal-site operators: one to get involved in! All others: one to emulate in your part of the deal-hungry world…? In surveys around the globe, consumers consistently rank waiting on hold for customer service as one of their most frustrating experiences. Alleviating this annoyance, Virginia-based startup LucyPhone lets users circumvent the hold lines with a free service that does the waiting for them.
Here’s how it works: visitors to the LucyPhone website enter the toll-free number of the company they want to contact, or find it in LucyPhone’s extensive database of customer service numbers, and enter their callback number. Moments later, the user receives a call from LucyPhone patching them through to the company. The user proceeds through the company’s phone menu as normal, and when placed on hold, presses ** and hangs up. LucyPhone stays on the line and as soon as a customer service agent picks up, LucyPhone calls the user back and connects them. The service can also be accessed via the free LucyPhone iPhone app.
LucyPhone is currently only available in the United States. One to partner with or emulate to ease the frustration of lengthy on hold wait times for consumers in other parts of the world?
